What are the official rules?
  • Applicants have to be born in Texas, currently reside in Texas, or have lived in Texas for five (5) consecutive years.  (Verification may be required)
  • Applicants have to be a minimum of age 18.  (Verification may be required)
  • Any genre of music is accepted.
  • Two MP3 songs may be uploaded per applicant.
  • One lyric sheet per song must be uploaded.
  • A $25 processing fee is required.  Payable by credit or debit card.
  • Songs are scored by music industry professionals based on songwriting skill, talent and potential.
  • Songs can be co-written.
  • Self publishing is accepted
  • Uploaded songs may be sung by someone other than the applicant.
  • Previous winners are not eligible to win again.


Do I have to attend a school within the state of Texas?

No. We are inviting songwriters around the state of Texas 18 years or older to participate.


What is the submission deadline?

The contest will close at 11:59pm, Sunday, September 17th, 2017.


What happens if I am chosen as a finalist?
  • 8 finalists will be chosen.
  • Finalists will be notified on Wednesday, September 27th, 2017.
  • All finalists will attend a 2 day songwriting workshop hosted by Jack Ingram and panelists Jon Randall and Liz Rose.
  • A songwriters will perform at the private Texas Songwriter U Kick-Off, an event and performance on the evening of Wednesday, November 1st at Yeti Flagship, located just south of Lady Bird Lake and the Congress Bridge. Here, finalists can perform any two original songs.
  • All finalists will also perform in a Texas Songwriter U Showcase, an event at The Saxon Pub alongside Jack Ingram, Jon Randall and Liz Rose on Thursday, November 2nd, 2017 at 8 pm. One accompanist is allowed to play with the finalists at the showcase. Accompanist travel expense is not covered by the TxSU. Two family members can attend the Showcase free of charge
  • 2017 Texas Songwriter U workshop dates for our eight finalists are Thursday, November 2nd and Friday, November 3rd, 2017.
  • Workshop moderator: Singer/Songwriter Jack Ingram
  • Workshop panelist and mentors: Singer/Songwriter Jon Randall and Songwriter Liz Rose
  • All finalists shall come prepared with instrument, lyrics of submitted songs, and prepared to play those songs in the workshop
  • Only finalists can sit in the workshop. (No accompanists)
  • Finalists can expect feedback and a post-event support by our workshop leadership
  • Finalists may be scheduled for time on air with our partner radio program
  • Finalists will be provided with professional photography keepsakes highlighting the workshop and showcase experience
  • Finalists will be responsible for their own transportation to Austin.  Finalists will be reimbursed for travel expense up to $200.
  • Receipts and/or mileage records will be required for reimbursement. No exceptions.
  • All finalists will stay two nights at The Hotel Van Zandt
  • Hotel incidentals will need to be covered by the finalists.
  • Breakfast, lunch and dinner on the 2nd and breakfast on the 3rd will be covered by TxSU
What happens if I am chosen as the final winner?
    • The 2017 Texas Songwriter U winner will be announced at the final workshop
    • The winner will be selected on the basis of the songs submitted at the initial screening.


    • The winner will receive:
      1. An opening act for Jack Ingram at a concert or music festival of his choice, travel expenses paid.
      2. A recording studio demo session at The Compound Studio in Austin, Texas, or a TxSU-approved studio near the artist’s location, valued at $1,500.00.
      3. Opportunity to co-write one song with Jack Ingram, and with Liz Rose
      4. Performance Opportunity at the 2018 MJM (Mack, Jack & McConaughey) After-Pick Party
      5. An Epiphone Masterbilt Century De Luxe Archtop Vintage Sunburst Acoustic/Electric guitar
